Monthly Shonen Rival First Issue by Koudansha was released on the 4th. A signboard in Akihabara says "having rivals makes me stronger! The real monthly Shonen (boys) manga has arrived!"
"Shonen Rival" is a magazine whose target group is normal boys who are not Otaku. Mantanweb says "a new manga magazine for junior high and high school students." "It's kind of sequel to Comic BomBom, which suspended publication since November 2007 (the target group of the magazine was young boys)." "The hero and his good rival are always hostile to each other- the rule of virtue of Shonen manga. That's why the magazine is named 'Shonen Rival.'"
Toranoana 1st Branch says "the best Shonen magazine has come! From the beginning, it has more than 1,000 pages! It's magnificent for Shonen magazine- 21 stories by grand authors! Let's get the best magazine in 2008 and burn into your memory!"
Fragemaster-san says "it is really thick, so I laughed! Oh, I see… the guy of the message, 'I'm not gonna lose against the guy' may be Gan**n? (maybe the meaning is different w). Daienjyo-san says "anyhow, the catchphrase, 'having rivals makes me stronger' and the release day (4th in each month) show that it is conscious of Jump SQ."
There is a thick magazine, Shonen Gangan, which is able to kill a person (since it's EXTREMELY thick!?), and in Akihabara on the 4th (both magazines are released on the 4th of each month), Monthly Shonen Rival and Monthly Shonen Gangan were next to each other at stores. However, I did not see any store that compares those two magazines.
